Java – Service Dog Training

November 2024 Update

Java started to with Highland Canine for service dog training. He hasn’t yet been designated toward a certain type of service work yet, but he’s learning the basics of being a service dog and having the appropriate manners and reactions in public. One of the most important parts of being a good service dog is being emotionally consistent and reliable during all sorts of interactions their humans will encounter throughout the day, everything from cars on the road, to busy malls, to watching other dogs and still maintaining their composure.

Java is going through his fear period. This is a time when pups’ brain is developing and this particular stage has them putting a bigger picture of the world together. It is thought to have an evolutionary significance, helping the dog to mitigate getting hurt or injured as they’re more interested in exploring and trying new things. They feel different than they did before, causing a change in behavior. This often manifests in a bit of reactivity and fearfulness–things that weren’t so scary before, can be a bit scary again.

For Java, he’s recovering from this, learning that things aren’t all that scary anymore. This happens with all dogs, although the age of its occurrence changes with different breeds and may show itself a little differently with different personalities and environments. (Think of you kid when they turned into a teenager…😬).

“Best Place to Get a Standard Poodle, Hands Down!”

I could not be happier to be a poodle mom for my Dahlia, who was bred at Tamarack Standard Poodles and cared for by the owner, Laura.  As a breeder of poodles, Laura was so nice and approachable, and clearly an expert on this incredible breed.

When I went to meet Dahlia and (naturally) to take her home immediately, I was pleasantly surprised to have a comprehensive history on her parents printed out and in a binder for me to take with me.  The care shown for the puppies was evident and it was clear to me that the first weeks of my baby’s life were pleasant, peaceful, and harmonious.

Laura’s communication throughout the process was filled with quick and precise correspondence and she was so patient with me as I asked all my questions.  She only places her puppies in the best homes and has created lifelong relationships with many of her clients.

As for my beautiful and caring Dahlia… her coat is immaculate, her disposition is calm and curious, and her affection for me and my child as well as for other children, family members and dogs is a perfect combination of joy, love and playful spirit.  She is smart (maybe too smart for her own good!) and respectful and learned very quickly how to be the best girl she can be.

I enthusiastically recommend Laura & Tamarack Standard Poodles to anyone looking to get the best poodle in the world.  They simply are the best!
