Below are many of the questions we get asked all the time. If you have more questions just send me a text or give me a call!

Should I spay/neuter my puppy at an early age?

Early desexing has serious proven implications to the physical and mental health of dogs for the rest of their (often much shorter) lives. I recommend waiting to spay/neuter your pup until after the pup has turned 1 year old.

What are the health concerns with the Standard Poodle Breed?

All breeds of dogs have their own propensities towards particular inherited diseases.  While the Standard Poodle is physically built to be healthy (e.g. no squished face that promotes breathing issues, wrinkly skin) there are some diseases that are not uncommon in them.

All breeds of dogs have their own propensities towards particular inherited diseases.  While the Standard Poodle is physically built to be healthy (e.g. no squished face that promotes breathing issues, wrinkly skin) there are some diseases that are not uncommon in them.

You can find more information about common health issues in your breed here:   click here to see Tamarack Poodles Health testing page.

The best way to protect your new poodle puppy from inherited diseases is to make sure your poodle puppy is NOT INBRED. We use the Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) as a method to reduce inbreeding, in combination with health testing to verify genetic markers are not present in our breeding dogs.

We know you want to enjoy a long, healthy life with your Poodle and this is just one of the ways we work to make that happen.

What are Blue Standard Poodles?

A blue poodle is not a separate breed of poodle, but rather one of the variations in color of the standard poodle. Blue poodles have a distinctive blue-gray coat that sets them apart from other poodles. This coat color is the result of a genetic mutation that affects the production of melanin in the hair follicles.

Blue Standard Poodles are born with a black coat, which changes over time and is usually blue by 2-3 years old. A blue coat can fade or lighten over time.  They have dark brown eyes that are oval shaped and a black nose.  They have silver or white hair in their paw pads and black toenails.

A true blue coat can be identified when the puppies are 8 weeks old.  When you shave the muzzle, you can notice a slight difference in color between the muzzle hair and the topknot hair.  Sometimes dark grey hair can be found along a puppies ear edges.

Are Poodles Hypoallergenic?

Standard Poodles are hypoallergenic dogs. Since their unique coat rarely shed, fewer allergens are released into the air. As a result, allergies in humans are LESS likely to be triggered.

What Size Are Standard Poodles?

Standard Poodles are medium-sized dogs. They are typically 16 inches to 24 inches tall. Female poodles typically weigh 40-50 lbs. as adults. Males are slightly heavier at 60-70 lbs. They have a graceful appearance and a proud carriage. Their gait is springy, effortless, and light. Their coat is dense and curly.

What Size Are Our Poodles?

Our Poodles fall on the smaller size of Standard Poodles. Some are even a little smaller.

Let us know what you’re looking for in size and we’ll help you find the perfect Poodle pup.

Why Pick a Standard Poodle?

The Standard Poodle is one of the most obedient and smartest dogs, that has a playful enthusiasm and adventurous spirit. Poodles love to hunt, swim, run and retrieve. They love to cuddle with their owners and they develop a deep bond with their family members. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them great service dogs.

Do Poodles Bark?

Standard Poodles are talkative dogs. Therefore they are considered moderate barkers. They communicate through their bark and frequently tell you when they hear an unusual noise or when they hear a familiar car drive up the driveway. They also bark when they are excited to play and when they are not comfortable with a family member’s safety. For example, kids rough housing or wrestling would cause your poodle pup concern and they would feel the need to communicate that through their bark.

What is the average Standard Poodle Lifespan?

A Standard Poodle has an average lifespan of 12-15 years.

How Can I Extend My Poodle's Lifespan?

There are many ways you can help your poodle live a long and healthy life.

  1. Feed your Standard Poodle a high quality food. Cheap, manufactured dog food can be unhealthy for your pup. Try to avoid food with fillers, artificial coloring, artificial flavorings, and preservatives.
  2. Exercise your Standard Poodle. A well exercised poodle is a healthy poodle. Data suggests that regular exercise, helps prevent:
    *stroke
    *heart disease
    *some types of cancer
    *arthritis
    *canine diabetes

Exercise also helps poodles release pent up energy. As a result your poodle will be happy and relaxed while in your home.

  3. Visit your veterinarian regularly. Yearly veterinarian visits are recommended.
  4. Take steps to avoid bloat. Bloat occurs when a poodle’s stomach fills with gas, food or fluid and twists. Bloat can happen quickly and is an emergency. Limiting exercise and water before and after eating will decrease the risk of bloat. I always feed my poodles in their crate prior to rest time or bedtime. See our Health Page
  5. Keep your poodle’s hair and skin healthy. See our How to Groom a Poodle page
What Can I Expect in for Size as My Poodle Grows?

Poodle puppies grow rapidly during their first three months of life.  Their weight can increase up to 25lbs. within their first three months of life.  Then their growth rate slows down to 5-10 lbs. a month until they stop growing. Female poodles are typically smaller than male poodles.  A female Standard Poodles growth will significantly slow down when they reach 6 months. A male Standard Poodles growth will slow down a bit later, at 10 months.

Factors that affect a poodles adult size include; diet, genetics, health, environment, gender, and the age at which you spay/neuter your pup. Spaying and neutering young typically reduces adult weight due to the affect on hormones.

Here at Tamarack Standard Poodles, our moms are typically in the lighter range of the expected standard Poodle weight. We do not own any Standard Poodle Stud dogs, so the puppies expected weight will vary depending on the sire chosen for the expected litter.  We have planned litters with mini poodle studs. We are very excited to be expecting puppies that will be 25-35 lbs. at maturity.

When Should I Worry About My Poodle's Weight?

Poodles only eat when they are hungry which is not typical of most dog breeds. Many poodles graze on their food and only take small bites periodically. Therefore, it is not typical for a Poodle to become overweight. It is more often a concern
that your Poodle isn’t eating enough. Their curly coat can make it hard to notice when they are loosing or gaining weight. A Poodle can gain or loose weight without their owners noticing.  It is important to periodically feel their bodies to determine if they have gained or lost weight.

The amount of food Poodles need can depend on age, activity level, and metabolism.  If they need to gain weight you can add canned food to their diet. If they need to loose weight be sure to decrease treats and decrease portion size by 25%.

I offer 1 to 1.5 cups of food twice a day.  Some meals they will eat all of the food and at other meals they will only have a few bites. Two meals a day is much better than 1 large meal a day to avoid bloat.

If your poodle is healthy, happy and has plenty of energy for play and exercise they are most likely eating the right amount of food.

The Three Poodle Sizes, Standard, Miniature, and Toy

Standard Poodle Size

Standard Poodles are the largest of the poodle sizes. They are greater than 15 inches tall and they weigh between 40 to 70 pounds.

Miniature Poodle size

These poodles were developed after poodle breeders decided to continually breed the smallest standard poodles from various litters together. This resulted in a miniature poodle that typically measures 10 to 15 inches high and weighs between 10 and 15 pounds. This poodle size was used as truffle hunters in the woods.

Toy Poodle Size

The Toy Poodle is the smallest poodle. This poodle size had been used as circus performers in the past. Then they were bred as companion animals. They are less than 10 inches tall and weigh between 4 and 6 pounds.

All three poodle sizes make amazing pets.  They are all affectionate, agile, smart, and eager to please. The temperament of your poodle will depend on their environment and the temperament of their parents.  Temperaments are not better or worse depending on the size of the poodle puppy.

At Tamarack Poodles we focus on breeding healthy, Standard Poodles with sound temperaments.

What are French Poodles?

Although the Standard Poodle is referred to as a French Poodle, they originated in Germany. The poodle breed was developed in Germany to be duck hunters. Their original name was “Pudelin” or splashing in the water.

Surprisingly, the French Poodle is not French at all.

National Dog in France is the French Poodle

Some continue to call the poodle a French Poodle because the national dog of France is the French Poodle.  “Caniche”, meaning “duck dog” is the name the French use when talking about poodles.

The French Poodle breed began 400 years ago.  It was believed that their curly coat would protect them from the cold. They shaved their neck, legs, and tail so that they could be agile in the water.  Certain areas of their coat were not shaved to protect their vital organs and joints in the cold water.

After many years, noble families took a liking to French Poodles and they became their home companion animals.   Noble families found that they could excel as truffle hunters. Their silly nature and agility lead them to excel as circus performers.

A French Poodle is not a separate breed.

A French Poodle is the same breed as a regular poodle.  It is not a separate breed.

Why Do Poodles Have a Bad Reputation?

Poodles have a reputation for being high maintenance and a pain, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. They are just as fun and goofy as other, good-natured dogs.

Tamarack General FAQ

Do You Use Temperament Testing?

Yes, we use temperament testing to evaluate our puppies. While we’ve tried various temperament testing, we’ve settled on the Elite Breeder Formula, designed by Meg Howe. Her testing works well to quantify differences between puppies.

While there aren’t bad puppies, some of the puppies will be a better fit to your lifestyle than others. For example, some dogs will be more inclined to play fetch. This would work really well for you if you wanted to play fetch with your pup in the afternoon, but may be annoying if you’re working at your desk all day and your puppy keeps bringing you dirty socks.

This is why it helps us so much when you fill out the Puppy Owner Questionnaire (we’ll send this to you after you’re already set to get a puppy on the waitlist).

How is Temperament Testing Conducted

When the pups are close to 7 weeks old we run them through 8 personality tests that result in them getting a score which helps determine their personality.

We test things like their interest in new people and new stimuli, such as a rolled up paper ball…will they shred it? Investigate it? Or will they stand to the side to see if it moves more. Each result lets us know how the puppy will interact with the world and what process of socialization will work best for your puppy (it’s like giving you the secret sauce).

This allows us to match owners with their best fit puppy and ensures that inexperienced owners or those with very small children don’t end up with boisterous, high energy dogs.

How Does Puppy Selection Work?

Our poodle puppies for sale are personality matched, which means we evaluate the puppy’s temperament and personality and align them to your lifestyle. This process makes it easier for you, as the owner, to meet the dog’s needs easily, with the normal design of your lifestyle and activities, so you don’t have to do lots of extra planning to keep the dog entertained and happy.

We use combination of the puppy temperament testing and pair it with your questionnaire to align you with the perfectly matched puppy for you.

How long is the Puppy Owner Questionnaire (to help match you with the right pup)

The puppy questionnaire is a quick 19-question multiple choice form. There are no right or wrong answers, more so, they help us better understand your life and lifestyle so we aren’t sending you home with a puppy that’ll pull your hair out (Tamarack Therapy Dogs was not designed to give you a reason to attend therapy).

How Do You Accept Payment?

Payment is accepted through Cash, Venmo, Zelle, Gooddog (for credit card purchases, additional fee from Gooddog is charged to you), we also accept checks for deposits, but not for final payment, unless paid in advance.

Will You Ship a Puppy?

We no longer ship puppies in cargo (under the cabin in a plane), we’ve found this to be a bit too stressful for young dogs, making the transition to your home more difficult than it needs to be. However, if you’d like to fly in to meet us at the airport, we can transfer the puppy to fly with you in cabin under the seat.

We can meet you at either Syracuse International Airport (SYR) or Albany International Airport (ALB). Most people choose to book a same-day round trip, where they fly in, get the puppy and fly back same day.

If you are unable to be your own flight nanny, it can be arranged with a third-party service for an additional fee, the nanny will take possession of the puppy and hand it to you. These are priced out based on the service, but you’ll know the cost in advance.

Are Your Dogs Limited or Full AKC Registration?

The majority of our dogs are sold on a Limited AKC Registration, Limited–as opposed to Full–merely means there are no breeding rights included with the purchase, therefore you will be unable to register any offspring from your dog.

In the event you would like to breed and want Full AKC Registration, please let us know and we can discuss what you’re looking for in a breeder and set you up with the right puppy for your breeding program. We offer Full Registration on our Poodles for an additional fee, but we do not offer breeding rights on our English Labradors at this time.

Do You Ever Offer Guardian Homes?

Guardians are an unique arrangement where the guardian receives the dog as a puppy, but the dog is a part of our breeding program.

Depending on if you have a male or female puppy, the program would work differently.

Female Guardian Homes

When we need the dog for the breeding program, we will borrow the dog to breed, then place them back with you, until a week before whelping (birthing), we will have your female dog for seven weeks total, raising the puppies while she is here at our house, under our care. When the puppies are weaned, we will return her to you.

Guardian homes won’t be bred until they have a final score for hips from OFA at two years. We only breed guardian dogs twice, which concludes the guardian contract. At which time she is fully your dog.

Male Guardian Homes

Male guardians we will provide transportation and approximately two weeks notification of when we will need to have him. We will keep him for no longer than a week, then return him to you.

We will only ask to have your dog a maximum of two times per year, starting at two years of age and concluding when he is six years old, on his 6th birthday. At which time he is fully yours.

We occassionally have openings for guardian homes, if you are interested in helping to be a part of our breeding program, please let us know!

Do You Train Therapy Dogs?

Our focus is on breeding healthy dogs with a temperament and personality conducive to therapy work, this can include traditional therapy dogs, service dogs, and emotional support animals.

While we do early neurological stimulation (ENS) as well as following an adapted Puppy Culture socialization protocol, we do not train therapy animals. These processes prepare puppies for the world, but are not training them for specific tasks.

Please view our training page to learn more on how to turn a puppy into a therapy dog.

Can I Get a Puppy If I Don't Need a Therapy Dog?

Yes, while this is the design of our program, preparing our pups for life in the therapy world, it does not mean we exclusively sell our pups as therapy dogs.

If you want one, please apply and we’ll help you find the perfect pup for you!
